Introduction by Mark, Priest in Charge, Mission Ipswich East
Welcome to the all-you-need-to-know email about the MIE week of prayer & fasting (26-30 June). This is an annual opportunity to spend perhaps a more focussed period seeking God for the ministry and mission of MIE. It is such a privilege to be part of a Church where there is much to be praying about, not least our growing desire to meet with God in our worship, and for others to meet with God in our evangelism!
The main question I’ve had in recent weeks concerns the fasting element of the week, so let me address that first. There is a series of 5 articles that explore fasting, and that deal with issues around corporate fasting, what constitutes fasting, its role in our life as disciples of Jesus, and where it can go wrong! The second in the series shows how flexible a discipline fasting can be, with fasts of a day, or 3 days, fasts of undetermined length or famously 40 days all to be found in Scripture! Which is to say, please feel free to determine for yourself before the Lord the place of fasting next week. Some of us may aim to fast for the full 5 days, others perhaps 3 days (Wed-Fri), or 1 day (Wed), some not at all.
I’ve listed out the prayer meetings, with times and venues (and particular focus where appropriate) below. I know that some folk are also planning to meet in other groups, or to give their homegroup or Bible Study session that week over to prayer. Please do make the central prayer groups where you can. It is great encouragement to the wider Church to realise that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves. My experience has been that as the week progresses, and as the Spirit leads us into different areas to pray about, there is a journey that He takes us on as a Church. We can easily miss that if we only make one or two prayer meetings through the week.
